A sequel to Spare Yourself. Even the first lyric was on the cutting room floor of it and repurposed to build this song. I like to think that we’ve allowed the high emotional intensity of Spare to cool down and take another look at the relationship to see and hope that new meaning is revealed (revisiting the same thing in different emotional states - a good thing to do!).

What we end up hearing from the narrator is. . . still a lot of pain and self-pity. That stuff is hard to shake. But my hope as a songwriter is that I’ve left enough in here for the listener to see more about this breakup and what happened, even if the narrator isn’t fully aware of it in their telling. I like to think they are aware in the last chorus when, either out of acceptance or resignation, they let go.

An eternal tip of the hat to Rachel Bloom’s book to introduce me to the idea of thought diffusion, or, letting birds come and go through the barn rafters of your mind without trapping them inside.

I fell in love with a bird
In the autumn time
In the winter, I
Learned migration, didn’t I?

I built a nest in the snow
With a spider’s mind
How I sought to find
You can imagine my surprise

Try to build a home
Try it all alone
Nomadic or you’re not
I was just another stop

My hand was clasped at the coast
And the ocean wide
Was a forest and I
Could not make out the tree line

I was in love with the urge
And like a vessel she
Held it perfectly
And so inevitably

Try to build a home
Try it all alone
Nomadic or you’re not
I was just another stop

So I discarded all my maps
And I disarmed the traps
Let go of what you thought
I unraveled that old knot

I fell in love with a bird
And the memory
Instructing me
All things pass eventually
